On June 27, NHK announced that Kyo Machiko’s highly esteemed WWII-era manga Cocoon will be receiving an anime adaptation.
Former Studio Ghibli animator Tateno Hitomi and her production company Sasayuri will be producing the anime.
The manga, appearing to be based on the Himeyuri students in Okinawa, depicts tragic wartime experiences through the eyes of two schoolgirls who are drafted into the war effort and find themselves becoming nurses for soldiers wounded in the Pacific War.
For the 80th anniversary since the end of WWII, Cocoon was chosen to be adapted into an anime in hopes that viewers can reflect on war and other related themes. It is scheduled to broadcast sometime in summer 2025.
